The wonderful bottle gourd – calabash – is from very old days used as a vessel for keeping the most important: water, drinks, medicine and even light – used as a lampshade. Calabash was even considered to have healing and magic abilities – probably due to its characteristic feminine and sensual shape.
The direct function of a lampshade is to contain “the light” and to reflect it. But it is still present in the room when the light is switched off. The soft organic shape of a Calabash with its characteristic “waist” is a suspended sculpture that with its double convex mirrored surface reflects the whole room at once.
